After The Secret Lemonade Drinker...

After his sensational debut with The Secret Lemonade Drinker readers had to wait just two years before Guy Bellamy’s second novel - I Have a Complaint to Make - appeared in 1979 (Secker & Warburg). This book received more strong reviews:

“I found it all uproariously funny…” Tribune

“Funny…also serious, inventive, sometimes touching and altogether likeable…” Financial Times

Breezy, amusing…a sharp accurate picture of a man with nothing in particular to live for.” Yorkshire Post

The book is immensely witty, intriguing and insightful and, as a bonus, contains the (intentionally) funniest erotic line in fiction…

I Have a Complaint to Make was re-published as a Kindle edition in May 2013. It is available from Amazon.

The Sinner’s Congregation was Guy Bellamy’s third novel, published by Secker & Warburg in 1982. It was re-published for the Kindle in May 2013. It is available from Amazon. It is cleverly plotted and it’s tempting to think that the author drew on his recollection of his National Service days in the RAF in the portrait of a principal character in the story., the brutal Ex-Corporal Edwin Catchpole. The book was again well-received by critics:

“Zany, with snappy dialogue and nice throw-away lines, the story carries a genuine sense of the lonely tragedy beneath the chuckles.” Sunday Express

“Crackles with aphorisms…a powerful novel.” Daily Express

“High comedy…high entertainment.” New Yorker

Guy Bellamy’s fourth novel - The Nudists - appeared in 1986. A Kindle edition was published in May 2013. It is available from Amazon. The opening line of the novel is a golden hook: “Venables first saw the woman he wanted to marry on the day after his wedding.”

Reviewers once again heaped praise:

“It is rare for a book to be comic, happy and readable all at once, but Guy Bellamy’s ‘The Nudists’ is just that.” Daily Telegraph

“Cruel hilarity…” Mail on Sunday

“Snaps, crackles and pops…A book to be grateful for…” Scotsman
